The fans of Designated Survivor have been waiting for it to return with a season 4. It has been on their minds for a long time now. The third season of the political thriller released in June 2019 at Netflix, the streaming service giant. It became a hit, and now the viewers are eager to see what’s next for President Tom Kirkman.
Will there be a Designated Survivor season 4? Release Date
It’s an unfortunate piece of news that Netflix has officially canceled the Designated Survivor series. A large proportion of the fans believed that it will continue to return with new chapters when the streaming service provider picked it up after ABC had canceled it. If some network picks it, then only it could be saved from the TV graveyard now.
While canceling the show, Netflix said that they are proud to offer a third season to the fans and will continue to host the first three seasons in the future. The service also thanked its star cast and crew members for bringing up such a compelling and satisfying show. Sutherland also thanked everyone via a video on social media.
Sutherland said while talking to Simon Mayo on Scala Radio, that he wasn’t hopeful for the fourth season. He also added that they are thankful for the kind of freedom they got to work with Netflix. One reason for the cancelation is the complication in the contract. It is very different from network television to Netflix.
The service didn’t hold many of the series’ actors. As a result, they left for other jobs. So, making season four becomes very difficult and complicated at the moment. He urged everyone to find something to work upon. However, Netflix has neither confirmed nor denied those comments about contracts.
As per a report by Deadline, Network and studio Entertainment One has a contract for just one year with the cast. Thus, their contracts ended with the season three finale. The report also added that Kal Penn already has other projects in-hand.
In May 2018, ABC canceled the show. At that time, it averaged 3.9 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating. It was 30% and 40% less than the first one respectively. The freshman season premiered on September 21, 2016, followed by second on May 11, 2017. The third came on June 7, 2019. There were a total of 19, 22, and 10 episodes in the first, second, and third seasons respectively.
Who is in Designated Survivor season 4 cast?
In the third installment finale, we got to see that sitting president Tom Kirkman won the election. However, it becomes interesting to see if Sutherland would return if and when the show is saved for a second time.
It’s not just about Sutherland, it about all other cast members including Aaron (Adan Canto), Isabel (Elena Tovar), Emily (Italia Ricci), Leo (Tanner Buchanan), Penny (McKenna Grace), Mars (Anthony Edwards), Sasha (Jamie Clayton), and Dontae (Benjamin Charles Watson).
Emily had an emotional end with the finale of the third installment. Dark secrets of the election campaign were revealed to her. It got her horrified and eventually left the election celebrations in tears. It could also mean the end of her story. Maybe, she could run in again to change the system or something else.
Tom’s son Leo wasn’t featured in the third run. It’s because he is admitted at Stanford University and is studying there. He could play some part in the future. FBI arrested Lorraine in the end. So, it could also mean an end for her. Also, we already know that Kal Penn has signed up for more projects other than this, so his position is also doubtful.
What will happen in Designated Survivor season 4? Plot
As of now, we don’t have answers to a number of questions even after the season three finale. It ended on a cliffhanger giving rise to new questions. The biggest of them is – will Emilly return, will Aaron get to know Isabel is having his baby, and specifically, is the bio-threat over?
These are some of the biggest plot threads of the series right now. And, they need to be addressed as soon as the show returns, if it returns with the fourth season. It remains to be seen if we would get answers to these questions. As of now, the three beautiful seasons have come to an end.
