After a wait, of nearly 34 years, we finally have our favorite Aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell coming to our theatres on July 2, 2021. Due to coronavirus pandemic, the upcoming sequel’s release date has been two times. At first, it was June 24, 2020, then it was postponed to December 23, 2020.

Top Gun: Maverick Trailer

The first trailer was revealed on July 18, 2019, at the Comic-Con International. With the release of a second trailer on December 16, 2019, it promised beautifully shot real flight scenes. Maverick and his young recruits are seen flying F/A-18s. It already has us hooked and waiting anxiously for the return of fan-favorite Navy Fighter Weapons School, Miramar.

Top Gun: Maverick Cast

We already know that Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) will be facing off again. Who else will be joining Top Gun: Maverick? Miles Teller, who starred in whiplash, has been cast as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Late Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

Actors Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell, noted for Hidden Figures, both auditioned for the role along with Miles Teller, but he succeeded them. Glen Powell was as charming as ever, and they decided to cast him as a young pilot and also expanded his role. Jennifer Connelly plays female lead and Maverick’s love interest as Penny Benjamin.

Charlie Blackwood, who was the female lead in Top Gun, will not be making an appearance as she wasn’t asked to be a part of the sequel. Tom Skerritt as “Viper” may not be returning or maybe a cameo might be in the works, but he hasn’t said a word about it.

The beautiful Meg Ryan, who portrayed Goose’s wife and now Bradley’s mother won’t be reviving her role as she hasn’t been seen anywhere around the project. Also in the movie are John Hamm and Ed Harris, although their characters haven’t been revealed.

Michael Ironside as Lieutenant Commander Rick “Jester” Heatherly won’t be back from the original movie as his relationship with the producer Jerry Bruckheimer isn’t great. (check: Hamefura Season 2.)

Top Gun: Maverick Plot

The sequel presents us with Maverick dodging his retirement and training a group of graduates for an ultimate mission, and no one has ever witnessed anything as such. And the arrival of Goose’s son is going to be hard on Maverick as we go through a roller-coaster of emotions along with them.

The graduates will be tested on their endurance skills and if they can handle being in situations that are terrifying and yet brave which have never been seen before. Who is willing to sacrifice everything for their mission, and who proves their mettle? It sure will be action-packed with real flights taken to skies and dangerous maneuvers, while we’ll be at the edge of our seats.

In an interview with Conan, Tom Cruise shares some of his experiences while filming this movie. It is known that in the previous installment F-14s were flown by the graduates. This time it’s the new F-18s that are capable of going around 9 Gs.

Since they wanted to be able to shoot a practical scene, they worked with the Navy, and they have some of the most excellent fighter pilots, says Tom. He continues that the actors had to be tested if they can sustain such conditions as not everyone can fly in these kinds of G force.

Around 3-4 Gs is experienced by an average human being while riding on a roller-coaster, so it’s hard to imagine if a person can withstand 8-9 Gs. The camera work was especially tricky, and all kinds of fantastic engineering went into them being able to sustain 8 Gs, which is the required amount.

The aerial footage turned out to be exceptionally beautiful, and we can’t wait to get those visceral thrills or at least the feeling of it. Tom Cruise said, ”I’m a pilot myself, I love flying, and I love aviation, so this is also, it’s just, a love letter to AVIATION”.
