The old Hindu myths sources revealed that a demon named Narkasur, who ruled the region of Pragjyotishpur kidnapped women and kept them in Harem. He was then defeated by the king of Devas, Lord Indra by snatching the earrings. Afterwards the Goddess of Earth, Bhumi killed him for the sake of the world. This day is also considered same as that of Kali Chaudas.
The second wife of Lord Krishna, Satyabhama after knowing the act of Naraksur, she requested Lord Krishna for granting the powers to defeat Narkasur. It is a belief that Naraksur born with a curse that he will be killed by a lady. After granting powers from Lord Krishna, Satyabhama decapitated Narkasur and saved women kept in Harem.
Due to this story, on this day, females decorate their eyes with Kajal for keeping the negative vibes away. Not only this, people take a special bath with gram flour and good smelling powder. After the completion of these rituals, Diyas are lighted along with the Pujan process and special dishes such as vermicelli and sweet rice are served.
