Tamil New Year Wishes: TNY aka Puthandu is going to be celebrated on April 14 in 2020. Generally, it is observed on similar date. It marks the first day of the Tamil New Year as per the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Seeing its significance, this day is marked as a holiday in both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
Like Diwali and auspicious festivals, people in Tamil Nadu clean their homes, offer prayers, and eat well-cooked food. Tamilians come together to celebrate it with much pomp and enthusiasm.
According to the Drik Panchang, following is the auspicious time for Puthandu 2020:

Sunset timing: 6:56 pm
Sankranti moment: 8:39 pm on 13 April
On this day, people wake up a little earlier than usual to take a bath. Then, as usual, they wear new clothes and arrange three fruits – jackfruit, banana, and mango. Apart from these fruits, they place silver or gold jewellery, money, arecanut, betel leaves, and flowers on the same tray.
This ritual is known as Kanni. According to them, it bring happiness and prosperity to them. Tamil people decorate houses, and the festival is celebrated with family and friends. Generally, there are two dishes made on Puhandu – one sour and one sweet. Another special addition could be rice kheer or pal payasam.
As per the legends/mythology, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day. He is one of the Holy Trinity in the Hinduism. As mentioned in the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881, Puthandu is a part of 23 public holidays of Tamil Nadu. Besides India, the festival is also celebrated in countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, and Malaysia.
