Alliant Energy Beginning Big Push to Expand Solar-Generation Capabilities

Alliant Energy (LNT) was unchanged in late Monday trading and the utility company tonight saying it is moving ahead with plans to significantly boost its solar-energy generation capabilities, today issuing a request for proposals for new projects that could increase its system-wide solar generation by as much as 50% over current levels.

Alliant Energy previously had helped about 1,650 customers in Iowa connect individual solar or wind systems to the electrical grid. Overall, the company serves around 226,000 customers throughout the state.

The RFPs will seek out builders for solar projects of between one to 10 megawatts, which would provide enough electricity to power between 200 and 2,000 homes. Prospective bidders must file their notifications of intent to bid by Oct. 15.
