The country artist artist was born in Natchez, Mississippi on 9th March 1936. Irene and Arthur Gilley were his proud mother and father respectively. However, there is a debate on his year of birth. Some sources say it’s 1936 while some strongly suggest 1937.
Gilley’s family moved to Ferreddy, Louisiana. So, he was brought up there only with his cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart. It’s already known that Jerry liked Rock music while Mickey Leroy Gilley liked country music. On the other hand, Swaggart loved to play piano, so turned out into a famous evangelist.
These three cousins loved music. Gilley’s mother supported her son’s dream even when she used to make $18 per week at that time. She perceived her love for music and bought a piano for Mickey when he was ten.
Since childhood, Gilley was really good at playing piano. Rather than just playing music, Mickey started to make music too. For his cousin Li Jerry, he made some recordings in a studio. By that time, they had moved to Houston, Texas. While living there, he started playing piano and music in neighborhood clubs.
As the time passed by, Mickey became a big hit at the small US label. Later on, he signed with Dot Records. He made his debut with George Morgan in 1974. They worked together for Room Full of Roses. By 1980s, Gilley has already delivered 17 hits. Thereafter, he never looked back, and recorded fifteen albums in his lifetime.

The sad news of Gilley’s death was revealed by Jeff Wagner, the Mayor of Pasadena, Texas. Mickey died several days after he canceled tours because of deteriorating health and low energy levels. He shared the cancelation news on his Facebook account. He apologized for canceling the May dates. In May 2022, he had to perform at the theatre in Branson.
He revealed that doctors had suggested him to cancel the tour and take rest for the betterment of his health. But, he didn’t know at that time that he will die in near future. Pasadena Mayor said that the world has lost a true legend on May 7, 2022. He obliged to have known Gilley throughout his life.
There was no immediate or official comment on the cause of death of Mickey Gilley. We just know that he died at his home in Branson, Missouri.
