Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian Sr. has resigned following the row of Black Lives Matter. The husband of Serena Williams, the tennis star has asked the board to be replaced by a black candidate.
Recently, Ohanian donated $1 million (USD) to Know Your Rights Camp of Colin Kaepernick. He released a video on Instagram, on Friday, to share his message.
He captioned the video saying, “I co-founded Reddit 15 years ago to help people find community and a sense of belonging. It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?'”
He made this decision based on the current situation prevailing around the world, especially the United States of America (USA). He resigned in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a black man.
Floyd was killed by a white Minneapolis, Minnesota police officer (MPD) named Derek Chauvin. Three other officers namely – Tou Thao, J Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane have been charged for aiding and abetting murder.
The killing has sparked outrage against racial discrimination across the globe. Numerous protests have been held and are still going on to demand justice for George Floyd. The protests have also led to various violence incidents.
The 46-year-old, father of two daughters, died last week. He took his last breath in the custody. The 44-year-old Chauvin tried to restrain him, as he told, by putting his knee on Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes while arresting him.
Coming to Ohanian’s action, he added that he has resigned as a member of the Reddit board and has urged them to find a black candidate who is suitable to fill his seat in the company. Also, he said that he will be using his Reddit stock to serve the black community, especially to curb racial hate.
According to Ohanian, his resignation act can prove to be an act of leadership from people in power right now. He has also urged people, who are working hard to unite people and eliminate the hatred based on race, to keep up with the good work.
During the George Floyd protests, thousands of American citizens have been arrested as they were protesting to seek justice for the dead. Majorly the protests were peaceful, but they turned violent at some places. People even looted and damaged public property.
George Floyd’s funeral will take place on Saturday. However, the mourners in three cities – Minneapolis, Raeford, North Carolina, and Houston, Texas can still pay their respects at services happening to honor Floyd’s life in those cities.
Floyd’s body will be brought to Raeford, North Carolina, his birthplace on Saturday. It will brought there for public viewing from 11 am to 1 pm ET at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters. Then, at 3 pm, a memorial will have to take place.
Then, Floyd will be buried in Houston, Texas.
