Seattle: A Seattle protester Summer Taylor, 24-years-old, has died at the hospital after getting struck by a speeding car on Saturday midnight during a rally held against the police brutality in the state. Seattle’s Summer Taylor death news came after Washington State Patrol announced Saturday dusk that the highway is kept closed, and it would arrest the people protesting on Interstate-5.
The patrol posted the message on social media, saying the move was to protect protesters.
“For the safety of all citizens including protesters and motorists, pedestrians walking on the freeway will be arrested,” the agency tweeted.
The state police department identified the suspect as Dawit Kelete, 27 years old, a Seattle native, who drove through a closed I-5 highway on the wrong side and struck two protesters on midnight Saturday.

Repeated shouts of “Car! Car!” is heard in the video taken by the protesters.
An ambulance reached the scene immediately and took the two victims, Diaz Love & Summer Taylor, to a nearby hospital Harborview Medical Center, Trooper Rick Johnson of State Patrol told a newspaper. Taylor had received life-threatening injuries after the accident, doctors reported.

Summer Taylor Worked For A Veterinary Clinic
Katelyn Hoberecht, a close acquaintance who worked with Taylor at Urban Animal veterinary clinics, told that Taylor often went to protests.
“Summer has been there since Day One standing up for Black lives. Staying out all day and night, while still working full time taking care of animals,” Hoberecht told the media.
“Summer talked to me about the protests, and how incredible it was to be a part of something so huge. A part of history.” Hoberecht pays tribute to the deceased friend by putting Taylor’s photo as profile picture.
U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris Paid Tribute
U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris took to twitter, “Absolutely heartbreaking. Summer Taylor was only 24-years-old, peacefully protesting for BLM when they were struck by a car. Thinking of their family during this difficult time and everyone in the movement today.”

Diaz Love, 32, resident of Bellingham, is still receiving the treatment at the hospital. Her injuries are not classified as life-threatening, though she received severe bruises and internal organ injuries.
Diaz had been broadcasting the entire protest on a Facebook live-stream and titled it “Black Femme March takes I-5” when all of a sudden, screams of “Car… Car” was heard repeatedly in the last 15 seconds. An earlier investigation revealed that the state police had closed the North & South lanes of I-5 at midnight Friday after people started jumping on the freeway from a ramp at Yale Street. Summer Taylor Seattle hit-and-run took place around 1:40 AM Saturday. The killer owned a White 2013 Jaguar and entered the South lane of I-5 from an undisclosed exit ramp and kept going down the road at high speed.

Protesters had blocked the southbound lanes of I-5 highway at Yale Street with their private cars and vehicles when a speeding vehicle pulled-through the gaps and hit two women.

The policemen arrived at the scene shortly after the bystanders informed the 911, and a trooper chased the driver and put him in custody, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said.
The driver Dawit Kelete is currently held in King County Jail (without bail) for further investigation into the matter. Charges imposed – two counts of vehicular assault.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan posted a tweet in support of all the protestors and citizens marching for a change, the tweet read:
“Our city stands beside their friends, families, and loved ones in praying for these women and all who were there.”
Both sides of the I-5 highway were closed following the investigation about the Seattle hit-and-run car accident, but it has reopened today.
Dawit Kelete Attended Washington State University & Drove For DoorDash
As per ABC7, Kelete, “is listed in public records as a student who attended Washington State University between 2011 and 2017 majoring in business and commerce.”
A LinkedIn page to the name of Dawit confirms the information. However, it is not clear whether he attended the Uni as a student or worker. The education section on his profile read, “Activities and Societies: Pi (sic) Kappa Alpha. Campus leader.”
The LinkedIn page also mentions that he drove for DoorDash, an American on-demand food delivery service, for about five months in 2015-2016. His job description read, “Sales Manager,” and language skills include Tigrinya.
Dawit Kelete GoFundMe Campaign
Earlier, someone established a GoFundMe fundraiser campaign for Kelete. But, it not more accessible.
According to Dawit’s Instagram profile, he is an avid party enthusiast and likes to party with his friends. The social media also indicates that Dawit Kelete once played soccer for a domestic club.
Dawit Kelete’s Instagram account has been deleted. It says, “Sorry, this page isn’t available.”

Police said that the Seattle Car Hitter Dawit Kelete was found sober, and alcohol intoxication or drugs were not responsible factors in the crash.
State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead released a statement addressing the incident:
“The WSP is exercising the safest means possible to avoid injuries or worse to motorists, protesters, WSDOT personnel, and our troopers by closing the roadway as needed and separating protesters and vehicular traffic. But the freeways are an inherently dangerous place for any pedestrian, and that is especially so for those assembling illegally on them. The WSP continues to support the rights of peaceful protesters, but the interstate is not a safe place to do that.”
