People who have seen and witnessed the character of V in ‘V for Vendetta’ get goosebumps whenever these lines are whispered in their ears. The inspirational music gathers the people and they come together. The movie depicts the fear that the people have of their governments. People forget they are for the government of the government by the government. All we have to fear is fear itself. GuyFawkes face is not just a mask but has become the iconic face for revolution and is been used by the hacker ‘Anonyms’ group.
Fawkes was a part of Roman Catholic activist and was caught when he tried to smuggle gunpowder which is estimated to be about 36 barrels into the House of the Lords. He wanted to destroy the building completely and wanted to kill King James I. He was tortured, interrogated until he gave up after eight days the names of the conspirators which were with him.
He was punished and hanged mercilessly, his body was dispersed into four parts, each at the corner of the kingdom to signify that revolution would not be tolerated.
The Bonfire Night is a significance of the fact that an individual who rose on single behalf and challenged the entire government. It is like a tribute that shall haunt the individuals in power. Moreover, it generates a feeling of ecstasy that liberates fear in individuals.
Whereas some believe this day is celebrated in order to honor the failed attempt of GuyFawkes who wanted to murder the royal family.
A similar attempt was made to depict the overthrowing of the British Tyranny by Wachowskis’ film ‘V for Vendetta’ which had a soldier who fought for freedom named ‘V’. His mask eradicates the hegemony of the hegemon.
“Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished,” the deliberate attempt of a face which hides behind the mask and justifying the character of his decision of wearing a mask by further explaining, “However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.”
The mask has become like a post-modern protest states the Economist “Hacktivist” group. The hacker group “Anonymous” gained its popularity in 2008 when it targeted the Scientology Church website while the members of the group wore Fawkes masks in the online videos. They chose a mask for basically two reasons, to remain anonymous which will help them in protecting their identities and another theory suggests it is like a spoiler alert for the people as they all will come together, wearing masks in the streets and it will be a masked nation. The Gunpowder plot signifies Fawkes and it is a popular Halloween costume today.
