The BBC hasn’t yet announced the release date for season 2 of McMafia. The first installment premiered on the new year 2018. Earlier, we were expecting it to be released in 2019, then on the new year 2020, but we haven’t got a piece of single official news yet.
In 2018, actress Maria Shukshina told Metro Russia that filming for the second installment would start in the following winter season. Moreover, her interview came just after the renewal of the series the same year. However, there has been unconfirmed news regarding filming, since then.
The BBC has been co-producing the series with Cuba Pictures and American network AMC, who has been behind successful shows like The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. The first season of McMafia had a total of 8 episodes. So, we can expect the next installment to have a similar number of episodes.
Who will be in McMafia season 2? Cast & Characters:
Expect the renewal news, there has been no casting announcement from the official sources. If the next segment is to start where it left off in the first one, then we can expect James Norton to be back as Alex Godman, a mafia kingpin.
Besides Norton, the following cast will be back reprising their characters’ roles – Juliet Rylance as girlfriend Rebecca Harper, Aleksey Serebryakov as father Dimitri Godman, mother Maria Shukshina as Oksana Godman, and sister Faye Marsay as Katya Godman.

What will happen in McMafia season 2? Plot
The story of the series is based on the non-fiction book of the same name penned by journalist Misha Glenny. In the book, the author has described how this crime got organized through the 80s and the 90s, and later on became a globalized phenomenon with an incredibly corporate front.
In his book, Misha Glenny has mentioned how he researched about the same. He has mentioned a series of extensive interviews with people at all levels involved in the organized crime – from the perpetrators to the victims and the middlemen in the complex hierarchy.
At the end of season one, we saw Alex wanted to flood the European markets with heroin. So, Alex brokered a big deal after impressing his partners in crime with his plan. In the upcoming installment, we could see him rising through the ranks of mafia bosses in Europe, and by the end, we could see him as a powerful figure in the organized crime world.
If the creators ought to deliver a different aspect of the modern crime world or seek to look at fresh chapters from the book, then we could get a brand new story to enjoy. When asked about the director and co-creator Watkins, he said that he wished the series to go down well with people, and then explore where they could head.
As per TheGuardian’s report, we could see the series becoming and giving feel more of an American version as season two comes out. The main reason for doing so is to impress and appeal to its American viewers. The decision was made by co-broadcaster and US network AMC.
Another change would be Selma writer Paul Webb taking charge as the new writer. So, when it returns, it will have a more American identity.
