This festival is celebrated annually at Sabarimala in the western ghats of Kerala state of the country. It is also known as Makaravilakku which is nothing but the celestial lighting visible in the sky on the festival of Makar Sankranti. On this day, millions of devotees unite together to celebrate the day with traditional rituals and methods.

Makara Jyothi is the star which is visible in the sky on this day and devotees worships it at Sabarimala Temple located at Kerala. People believe that this day, the Lord Ayyappan bless the pilgrims as Makara Jyothi. The Makaravilakku means the light appears three times on the hills of Ponnambalamedu which is around 4km away from the main temple.
