In 1905, Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother after she passed away. Her mother had a strong desire for making such a holiday. After that, Jarvis started the movement for establishing this holiday in the United States.
Initially, her request for the holiday was denied by the government but it didn’t stop her. Due to her efforts, in 1941, Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation for updating the government holidays with the second Sunday of May as a national holiday.

Though, some nations celebrate the same in different months or dates. In Greece, February 2 has been marked for mothers with a link to the Eastern Orthodox celebration of Jesus Christ in the temple.
