Anmol Narang, second-generation Indian immigration becomes the first observant Sikh to graduate from the West Point US Military Academy on June 12, 2020.
Anmol has graduated at such a time when racism is at its peak in the US, the entire nation is disrupted with protests and havoc. Anmol has set the benchmark for generations to follow.
According to the New York Times, the first-ever Sikh to serve as in the US Military is Simratpal Singh, a close family friend of Narangs’, who “cut his hair short and trimmed his bear” following the military set of rules. Later, he appealed the court to allow wearing the articles of faith such as a turban and keeping the beard long as described in the Sikh scriptures. The court granted his appeal in 2017.
Who is Anmol Narang? Early Life & Education
Anmol Narang is 23 years old and has secured the position of the second lieutenant.
Early Life: Narang is born and raised in Rosewell, Georgia by Sikh immigrant parents who moved from India to the USA in the 2000’s. She completed her high school from a local institution in Georgia. While she was in school, her parents took her to Pearl Harbour National Memorial in Hawaii. That sparked a flame in heart to become enter the US Army and serve the nation.
Anmol Narang completed her under-graduation from Georgia Institute of Technology before entering the West Point Military Academy. At West Point, she studied nuclear engineering to learn about air defense systems and continued on the path to becoming the first observant female Sikh militant in the US Army.
Military Background: The driving force behind Anmol’s dream to become the US Army militant was her maternal grandfather who served in the Indian Army.
“My grandfather was in the Indian Army. It was always a big part of my life and something I was always interested in,” she was quoted as saying in the NYT.
“I’m excited and honored to be fulfilling my dream of graduation from West Point,” Anmol stated.
“The confidence and support of my community back home in Georgia has been deeply meaningful to me, and I am humbled that in reaching this goal, I am showing other Sikh Americans that any career path is possible for anyone willing to rise to the challenge,” she said.
What’s Next For Anmol Narang?
As Anmol is a fresh cadet in the US Miliary, she will complete her Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma by the end of 2020. Once she finishes the basic course, she will move on to become a full-fledged militant in January 2021. (check: Maria Carey net worth.)

Anmol Narang’s Journey To Becoming The First Sikh To Graduate From West Point
In an interview with the New York Times, Narang mentioned her difficulties of tieing her 5 foot long hairs in a tight bun no bigger than 3.5 inches in diameter, as required by the US Army.
In 1987, Congress passed a law banning the presence of any articles of faith on militant’s body other than the required equipment.
With the course of time, the US military & US Air Force have allowed recruits to wear turbans and dreadlocks to represent their religion. But, other divisions of militaries such as the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are miles away from implementing such practices.
More than 5 Lakh Sikh-Americans live in the United States.
Katie Felder, West Point spokeswoman said that militants should always be recruited from different cultures. It is the only way to guarantee that “we have the right mix of talent which can represent the national security and utilize their unique skills when one fails to take the right decision,” Katie said in an interview with New York Times.
