No Game No Life Season 2 Release Date

To date, No Game No life season 2 hasn’t been announced. Therefore, we don’t have any official release date for the anime sequel in 2020, at least. The first installment premiered in April 2014. But, the sequel hasn’t been confirmed officially yet. However, that doesn’t mean that couldn’t be a second season.

Possibility of No Game No Life Season 2

The popularity of an anime doesn’t determine if it will get a renewal or not. For it, there are three factors that are most essential to check before proceeding. First of all, it is the availability of source material for a sequel that matters. The second thing to notice is the profit that an anime has made. The third is if it was popular.

These days, the majority of the animes are being adapted from existing materials such as manga, light novels, games, etc. It is done in order to increase its popularity and sales. In the case of NGNL, it might be the lack of light novels’ material.

If an anime fails to get a good profit, then the production committee may reject it to finance the sequel. It should be noted that the production of a one-cour anime television series like No Game NoLife can cost up to 3,000,000 dollars. That’s a serious amount to invest. Enough fan base is also critical for its success. If the fan base is enthusiastic, then it adds up to its renewal chances.

Now, let’s have a quick look at one of these factors to get an idea if there would be a NGNL season 2 or not.

Source Material Information for No Game No Life

Let’s have a quick look at the available source material. Here, we will talk about how many volumes are there in total, how many out of them have been used, and if the story is still ongoing. Finally, what is left for possible for the making of No Game No Life season 2 in 2020?

To date, a total of 10 light novel volumes of NGNL have been released. Two manga series based on the light novel series was released. In the first series, there were two books. It was just a re-narrative of the original story in manga format. The second one was a spin-off series.

The light novels are still continuing. On January 25, 2018, the author uu Kamiya (Clockwork Planet) published the latest volume. Only one book was published in 2016 and 2018. Let’s see if there would be more volumes in 2020.

Which light novels have been used for No Game No Life anime adaptation?

The first season aired in 2014 and covered volumes 1 to 3. After a while, the movie No Game No Life Zero was released based on book 6. It simply means that if anime has to be made it would continue from volume 4.

As of 2020, there are six books that haven’t been adapted into anime yet. So, we can conclude that there is enough source material for one more season, at-least. However, making of two-cour anime seems impossible being the release speed really slow.

The critical information needed for the anime sequel to be made is the profit made by both the tv series and the movie.

No Game No Life sales

Blu-Ray sales

The anime used a total of six disks to release. Each disk registered an average sale of 9000 copies. Thereafter a BD-Box was released for the series on February 24, 2016. Its sale went up to around 1000 copies.

Anime series managing to sell around 10,000 copies have been successful in managing to get a renewal. There have only a few series that manage to become so popular to get a Blu-ray selling this much. So, it is superb in terms of sales.

Light Novel sales

On August 25, 2016, volume 9 of the light novel series was released. It registered sale f around 160,000 copies. In 2018, volume 10 of the series was launched and it sold around 170,000 copies. The above figures were of Japan only. The light novels haven’t been too profitable, but they are still in the top 5 best sellers per volume sales. On a worldwide scale, it sold around 4.5 million copies.

Merchandise sales

There are a total of 45 figmas making money for it. Most of them include Schwi, Izuna, Stephanie, Jibril, and Shiro. Besides them, there are a total of 500 goods for NGNL including shirts, towels, mugs, tapestry, and more.

The merchandise sale has been amazing so far. It should increase the chances of season 2 getting a green signal. Its movie garnered lots of love from the fans as its merch and figmas sales went up. It got an extraordinary response which most of the anime movies fail to do so.

In 2017, the movie was released. But, the amazing thing about its popularity is that six new figmas were announced this year.

It can be concluded that the series is still popular. The release of the movie helped it in boosting the speed. One thing we should be concerned about is the releasing/publishing speed of the light novels.

Box Office

The collection made by No GameNo Life Zero movie was around 6.5 million dollars. The figure of Blu-Ray copies of the movie sold was around 40,000 in Japan. Its budget was around 1.5 million dollars and made around 2.5 million in profit.

Other ways that an anime adaptation generates profit include Soundtrack (OST), ending/opening songs’ sales, web radio, mobile game, international license for Sentai, streaming on Crunchyroll, and Hulu, various collaborations, Yen Press sales of the English light novels and more.

It can be concluded that the series is making money and still profitable. So, the money thing can’t stand in the way of a sequel either.

Why There is No No Game No Life Season 2

As mentioned above, it is still a popular series and it is making a lot of money for the production committee. So, the reason behind its delay is because of the slow-releasing schedule of the light novels, and nothing else.

In early 2016, the decision to make the movie was made as there wasn’t enough source material available to continue the anime. By that time, there were only six volumes, and the last one was a prequel story.

In one of the articles published online, we got to know that the author has been suffering from health issues. That is the reason why the light novels have been releasing on a slow speed. Making the prequel movie turned out to be a smart idea. With its release, it made a good profit and helped in keeping the franchise alive.

The movie turned out to be much better in terms of profit than anyone could have expected. It made a profit almost the same as the Konosuba movie.

Will There Be No Game No Life Season 2

We shouldn’t get surprised if No Game No Life season 2 gets an announcement in 2021 or 2022 and air a year later. Now, there is enough source material to do the sequel. Most of the anime studios including MadHouse are busy with their projects. It would a few years before announcing the release date.

The series has been making a continuous profit for the production committee, and still maintaining its popularity. We are hoping to see volume 11 in 2021. Stay tuned for more updates.
