Dennis began his acting career at a very young age, his first role was in Night Train for Inverness which was released in 1960. He later bagged a small role in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1960 season. Post this at the age of 14, he got a role in the TV series William, which was based on Just William books by Richmal Crompton.
He started gaining recognition through various roles he played, however, it was only after he bagged a role in The Sweeney that he became a household name. He, later on, went on to sing the theme tune for his other shows called Minder and New tricks which were among one of the best series that he worked in. His first wife was Penny Dixon whom he married in 1967 but it came to an end soon after 9 years in 1976. He then married Patricia Maynard in 1977 and got divorced in 1987 after 10 years of marriage. Soon he met Rula Lenska whom he married in 1987 and got divorced in 1998. It was alleged that he had violent behavior toward her, hence, their marriage ended.
It was quite rocky for him until he met Pam Flint who he had befriended in 1996, however, it turned into a marriage in 2011.
